FORT WAYNE, IN (April 5, 2019) -- USA Women’s Goalball landed in first and third place in this week’s international goalball tournament hosted at Turnstone in Fort Wayne, IN. Five international teams representing Australia, Great Britain, Israel, and the United States competed April 1-3, 2019 in the inaugural War on the Floor tournament.

USA (Red) competed against Israel to snag the championship title while USA (blue) placed third after overcoming Australia in the Bronze Medal match. Great Britain rounded out the fifth spot of the tournament.

“Competing against high-level international teams in the same venue that will be hosting a Paralympic Qualifier was a huge opportunity,” said Jake Czechowski, USA Women’s Goalball Head Coach. “We were able to give some of our newer players the chance to get a lot of playing time this week and they really stepped up to that challenge. Their performance in combination with outstanding play from our veteran athletes proved to be a winning combination.”

All four countries represented in this week’s tournament will return to Fort Wayne this summer for the 2019 IBSA Goalball & Judo International Qualifier with their sights set on qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The teams’ practice and competition at Turnstone is an important part of preparing to come out strong when qualifying competition begins on July 2, 2019.
