USA Goalball Takes Home Hardware in Berlin Nations Cup

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Oct. 25, 2022) – The USA Men’s and Women’s Goalball Teams both captured medals at the recent Nations Cup tournament held Oct. 7-9 in Berlin, Germany. The women's team captured the silver medal after an exciting 3-2 semifinal win over Canada that went to double overtime, a shootout and extra throws. Their only loss of the tournament came in the gold-medal final when they lost to Israel, 5-1. The men's team lost to Turkey, 15-8, in the semifinals but avenged an earlier loss to Germany by defeating the hosts in the bronze medal match, 7-5.

Both teams celebrate these wins as they continue to prepare for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. Their upcoming international competition schedule includes the 2022 IBSA Goalball World Championships in Hangzhou, China set for December 5-17, 2022. From the world championships, the top two men’s and women’s teams qualify for a berth in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

During the rescheduled 2020 Paralympic games hosted in Tokyo, the women’s team took home a silver medal while the men’s team placed fourth. That silver medal marked the 12th Paralympic medal in USA Goalball history and the seventh won by the women’s team.
