Turnstone Sled Hockey Team Finishes Second in the Nation
FORT WAYNE, IN (April 17, 2023)— This past weekend for the fifth time, the Turnstone Flyers sled hockey team finished second at Nationals.
Heading into the Championship game, Turnstone was 4-0 in three days (Thursday-Saturday) with games hosted in St. Louis. Turnstone had the hot hand outscoring their opponents 11-3 with two back-to-back shutouts led by Noel Klein in net.
Their opponent, Boston Spaulding Shamrocks had a similar resume as they were also 4-0 and had 20-6 in goals versus their opposition. Turnstone vs Boston became the showdown everyone expected.
Boston took an early 2-0 lead. Turnstone answered with 3:37 left in the first period to bring the game to one goal. Elliott Mohre sniped it from the right circle with a dish from John Pfeiffer that received it from rookie Jordy Petrosky. Midway through the second period, Turnstone evened up the score 2-2 with a nice shot from the slot by Cai Davis with help from Mohre and Peter Mitchell. Boston answered with a goal to take the lead again. This was short-lived as Turnstone picture-perfect breakout from their zone with Kevin Hughes finding Mohre in the neutral zone who went tape-to-tape to Davis who scored his team-leading seventh goal this weekend. The game continued to go back and forth until 5:07 left in the game when the Shamrocks got the lucky break on the final goal for the win.
The team's backbone was goaltender, Noel Klein, as he took on the entire load this season behind the pipes. He turned aside 204 shots in 28 games with six shutouts.
This is the fifth time Turnstone has been runner-up as they finished second at the following dates/locations: 2019 (Tampa), 2015 (Buffalo), 2013 (Philly), and 2012 (Dallas).
Turnstone has two National Banners with victories in 2017 (San Jose) and 2014 (Boston).
