Turnstone Among Top High School Wheelchair Basketball Teams at Conference Championship

Turnstone's Varsity wheelchair basketball team laid it all on the court as the top 12 teams from the Midwest Conference concluded their season this weekend (March 5-6) at the Best Choice Fieldhouse in Fishers, IN.

Turnstone was able to get revenge by defeating the Jr. Bucks from Milwaukee, WI 44-36. Earlier this season the teams matched up at the Regional Qualifier that Turnstone hosted where the Jr. Bucks had the four-point upper edge. In this rematch, Turnstone made all the rightZeb Pfenning preparing to shoot the basketball adjustments to close out an eight-point victory. This game was led by our two seniors: Alex Haag and Ignace Fernandes. Alex led the team with 14 points while Ignace had two gritty steals to close out the game.

Turnstone opened the tournament with a 40-41 loss to the Skyhawks from Chicago. Each team carried a maximum of a 6 point lead. Turnstone had numerous chances to put the game away but the #21 nationally ranked Skyhawks snuck out with the 1 point victory. This put Turnstone in an uphill climb as they faced the nationally ranked #15 Synergy Bulls also from Chicago. These two teams played back in November up in Grand Rapids. The Bull won then by 11 points and they won again this time by 15 points in a 36-51 match. Turnstone had an early 8 point lead that switched to only being down by 2 points at half-time. In the last nine minutes of the game, the Bulls went on a 12-4 run that Turnstone couldn't recover from.

Turnstone Flyers finish the season with a national ranking of #23 and an 8-8 overall record in the toughest conference as 9 teams are nationally ranked in the top 30.

Turnstone had 5 athletes selected to the Midwest Conference All-Academic Team:

  • Cole Connelley
