RESULTS: Fright in the Fort Wheelchair Basketball Tournament

FORT WAYNE, Ind (Nov. 1, 2021)- Playing their first invitational tournament in almost two years, the Turnstone Flyers wheelchair basketball team finished 2-2 in the Fright in the Fort Tournament at the Plassman Athletic Center over the weekend.

David Clements scored 32 points for RHI, an Indianapolis team that ranked seventh in the nation last year, while Zach Pfenning scored 16 and Alex Haag 12 for Turnstone in the first game. Matthew Simmons was the star for DASA, a team from St. Louis that ranked sixth in the nation last year, with 32 points in the second game, while Alex Haag scored nine, Pfenning eight and Micah Kling eight for Turnstone.

DASA also defeated MFB of Grand Rapids 50-13 on Saturday with Brett Forbes scoring 22 points and Simmons 15. RHI defeated MFB 42-29 behind 30 from Clements.

Turnstone earned its first win of the season on Sunday morning, beating MFB 46-23 behind 18 points from Pfenning, 13 from Haag and nine from Cole Connelley. The two teams played a rematch a few hours later for third place, and Turnstone won again, 33-27. Pfenning scored 16 and Haag 11, while Schuyler Whitney led MFB with 14 points.

DASA and RHI also played a doubleheader on Sunday with DASA winning 52-39 in the final round-robin game as Forbes scored 24 and Simmons 20, while Clements led RHI with 30. DASA also won the championship game 55-38 as Simmons scored 16, Behren Truemper added 12 and Forbes 11. Clements again led RHI with 13 points while Hannah Exline and Kaiden Schaf each added eight.

RHI and MFB each fielded teams in the prep division with RHI winning the first three games 32-8, 28-10 and 14-6 before MFB rallied to win the final contest 21-18 in double overtime.

The all-tournament team for the varsity competition includes Simmons and Forbes from DASA, Clements and Exline from RHI and Pfenning from Turnstone.

Turnstone’s varsity wheelchair basketball season continues next weekend with a tournament in Grand Rapids.
