Local Athletes Winning Big at Junior Nationals Sports Competition

FORT WAYNE, IN (July 17, 2019) – The Adaptive Sports USA 2019 Junior Nationals are currently underway in Eden Prairie, Minnesota now through Friday. Six local athletes are competing in various sports including team relay paratriathlon, individual triathlon, swimming, track, field, archery and air rifle with numerous first place finishes and new records in the books.

Zachariah Pfenning (Ligonier), Zebidiah Pfenning (Ligonier) and Maggie Peters competed in the team Relay for the Paratriathalon and won the event with a 23:39 time.

Maggie Peters (Fort Wayne) competed in the individual triathalon finishing 1st place overall with a time of 26:48. Maggie has also placed first overall in all the swimming events she has competed in including 50-yard freestyle, 50-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard fly, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle.

In addition to her first place finishes, Peters also set a national record in the long jump field event, and personal records in shot put and 50-yard breaststroke, taking 6 seconds off of her previous breaststroke time.

Zachariah Pfenning (Ligonier) earned a second place finish in the archery cubs division.

Zebidiah Pfenning (Ligonier) earned a first place finish in air rifle.

Zephira Pfenning (Ligonier) earned a first place finish in archery bowmen division and set a personal record in the javelin field event.

Caytlin Lucas (Edgerton) took first place, set a national record and set a new personal record in the discus field event.

Adaptive Sports USA’s annual Junior Nationals competition is a week-long national sport championship event for young elite athletes with a physical disability and/or visual impairment through the age of 22. Junior Nationals is an avenue for young people to advance along the athlete pipeline that may one day lead them to compete at the elite international level and the Paralympic Games.
