AJ Hummer Invited to National Tryouts for US Men's Wheelchair Basketball

FORT WAYNE, Ind (September 13, 2021) – Former Turnstone athlete AJ Hummer has been invited to the Under 23 (U23) tryout for the United States men’s wheelchair basketball team that will compete in the upcoming World Championships. Tryouts will be held during October with the players hoping to earn a spot on the U.S. team that will compete in Chiba City, Japan starting in late May 2022.

Hummer, a Waterloo native and a DeKalb High School graduate, and his brother Isaac started their basketball careers at Turnstone. AJ started when he was 8 and Isaac at age 15, and their sister Kendra has also been active with Turnstone. The triplets were born 14 weeks premature with various health issues. They weighed less than 2 pounds.

AJ and Isaac continued their careers at the University of Texas-Arlington and helped the school win the 2020 National Wheelchair Basketball Association title.

AJ is a junior at UTA, studying business marketing.

Turnstone had six representatives on the US 23 team that won the 2009 world title. Bob Burnsworth was an assistant coach, Doug Arambula was a team manager and former Flyers Jared Arambula, Dan Henson, Josh Swoverland and Kyle Killworth were among the 12 players on the roster.

The U23 men’s wheelchair basketball program is an international development team that serves as NWBA pipeline to the U.S. Men’s National Team. This program provides elite youth athletes the opportunity to compete at the international level. Team USA has medaled in four of the six U23 World Championships, having won gold in 2005 and 2009. The United States did not participate in 2013 and placed eighth in 2017. More updates at nwba.org
