Maggie’s Intern Story

Bishop Dwenger senior and Turnstone athlete, Maggie Peters has built an impressive resume of athletic accolades. But, this year, she has taken on a new role at Turnstone as an intern. Before her internship experience, Maggie was torn between her two interests of therapy and sports, and Turnstone’s comprehensive offering of services in both areas made it an easy choice.

“That’s why I chose to be an intern with Turnstone,” Maggie said. “Prior to this year, I have been thinking about doing something with therapy but I really loved sports too. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, so I knew that if I did work-based learning and I could get time in both fields I could figure out what I wanted to do and what was the best setting for me.”

Now halfway through her internship at Turnstone, Maggie has spent time working with our therapy clients as well as with sports and recreation management. She enjoys being able to help out fellow Turnstone staff, and clients and visiting adaptive sports teams.

While interning in therapy, she learned from different therapists and worked with a variety of clients. This was the perfect opportunity for her to test out the waters and engage in a real, hands-on work experience—one she has not previously had the chance to explore firsthand.

After spending some time in the therapy program, Maggie transitioned into the sports and recreation side of Turnstone, where she found her spark. Currently, in her role, Maggie is responsible for helping Turnstone’s Sports and Recreation Coordinator plan and organize events. As an athlete, Maggie is familiar with the events and tournaments that are hosted at Turnstone. Now, as an intern, she has the opportunity to be involved with the behind-the-scenes planning that goes into those events and tournaments.

“As an athlete now working behind the scenes I have a much better appreciation for the kind of work that goes into every little detail. I appreciate the event so much more having both perspectives now,” Maggie said.

Maggie’s contributions to Turnstone as an intern have made a significant impact to staff, athletes, and clients alike, and Turnstone is proud to be a part of her career journey.

It couldn’t be done without interns like Maggie who use their budding passions and career interests to add momentum to Turnstone’s mission.
