Turnstone Regionals & Nationals Recap

April 14th, 2016

Fort Wayne, IN: This past weekend, April 8-10th, several Turnstone teams were competing in different parts of the country. Our youth varsity and adult wheelchair basketball teams competed in Louisville, Kentucky at the Wheelchair Basketball Nationals. Our sled hockey teams were in Detroit, Michigan for the Sled Hockey Nationals and the USABA (United State Association for Blind Athletes) residence program goalball athletes and club team members were competing in New Jersey at a regional tournament.

Wheelchair Basketball (Turnstone Flyers – Youth Varsity Division team) 
Final Result: 10th place finish out of 50 Varsity teams. The Flyers finished their season with an overall record of 26-14.

National Tournament Games:
LOSS 30-56 vs #9 Jr. Pacers (Grand Rapids, MI)
WON 44-36 vs #11 Sonics (Seattle, WA)‎
WON 52-40 vs #15 RHI Racers (Indianapolis, IN)
LOSS 31-58 vs #7 Rush (Salt Lake City, Utah)


Wheelchair Basketball (Turnstone Bandits – Adult Division III team) 
Final Result: 12th place finish out of 89 Division III basketball teams. The Bandits finished their season with an overall record of 27-9

National Tournament Games:
LOSS 50-54 vs #1 TIRR Hotwheels (Houston, TX)
LOSS 41-52 vs #10 Rollin' Grizzlies (Memphis, TN)
WON 50-47 vs #9 Cavaliers (Cleveland, OH)


Wheelchair Basketball (Turnstone Flyer- Prep Youth Division team)
Our prep division team did not make the National cut this year but they had a great year and finished their season #18 out of 29 teams. For Nationals only the top 16 teams make the final cut. Our prep team was just shy of making Nationals as they had a handful of less than 10 point losses to the teams ranked in the top 16. In some games they only loss by 5 points. Our Prep team finished with an overall record of 6-15.


Sled Hockey (Turnstone Flyers—Intermediate C Division team) 
Final Result: 3rd place finish at Nationals for our hockey team in the Intermediate C Tier 2 Division. At Nationals there were 22 Intermediate C teams.

WON 1-0 vs Avalanche Warriors (Denver, CO) 3rd Place Game
LOSS 0-2 vs Warriors (New England) Semifinals
WON 3-2 vs ‎Imperials (Houston, TX) Quarterfinals
LOSS 0-2 vs Hornets (Chicago, IL) Pool Play
WON 5-0 vs Kings (Los Angeles, CA) Pool Play 


A total of 4 of the USA Men’s National players who have been training here along with 3 Men and 1 Female from our club program played on 5 different teams at the regional tournament.

Women’s Division
New York Lady Lions – Crystal Mossberger played for this team … they lost all four of their games

Men’s Intermediate Division
Columbus Crushers – Erik Rodriguez played for this team as they won GOLD 12-7 vs BSO Wings

Men’s Top Division
Michigan Omega – The team National Member Abel Del Toro plays on won GOLD 12-9 vs California Crown
California Crown –National Members Daryl Walker and Grej Prejeska play for and coached by Matt Boyle. Joe Hamilton didn’t join the trip but one of our club players Zach
Buhler played on this team … they obviously got SILVER in the 9-12 loss to Abel’s team.
South Florida Crossfire – National Member, Matt Simpson plays for and joined by club member Cody Carmicle … they finished 5th with a 4-3 victory over British Columbia
