The Important Role Of Volunteers During #IBSAFortWayne2019

Filling over 1400 volunteer shifts totaling nearly 6000 hours over the course of 2 weeks of activity, well over 700 volunteers came alongside over 600 international guests to make the event possible.

Co-hosted by Turnstone Center, the United States Association of Blind Athletes, and the International Blind Sports Federation, this event simply would not have been possible without the participation of our entire community.

Local and national collaboration succeeded in making this event a success in our community. Partners such as the City of Fort Wayne, Allen County Office of Homeland Security, the State of Indiana, Visit Fort Wayne, the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee, Fort Wayne Police Department, Embassy Theatre, the local Arts Community, The League for the Blind and Disabled, AWS Foundation, the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Wayne, Voices of Unity Youth Choir, Indiana Tech, Southwest Allen County Schools, Carroll High School Rugby Teams, Delta Gamma Fraternity, Downtown Improvement District, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Alex Hall, Heather Miller, Lutheran Life Villages, Marathon Technology, Neighborlink, Wunderkammer, Parkview Field, the Grand Wayne Center, and Hilton, Courtyard by Marriott, and Holiday Inn Purdue-Fort Wayne hotels all played a role in the event’s success.

And, business leaders such as Ash Brokerage, BOSMA Enterprises, The Plassman Family, Longe Optical, Sweetwater, Parkview Sports Medicine, Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership, Greater Fort Wayne, Summit City Chevrolet, Ambassador Enterprises, Katz Sapper & Miller, Lombart Instruments, Lincoln Financial Group, Mad Ants Basketball, Parkview Health, Physicians Health Plan of Northern Indiana, Special Olympics, Star Financial Bank, Strahm Building Solutions, Vera Bradley, Highmark Techsystems, and many others lent support to ensure that the best of Fort Wayne was on display.

From set up and tear down, to transportation, competition support, and more, the hours given by volunteers proved critical in demonstrating that Fort Wayne and Indiana are committed to welcoming, respecting, and celebrating people of all abilities. This is a deeply-rooted attitude that continues to lead the way not only in the Paralympic movement but also in transforming the attitudes toward people with disabilities around the world.
