Turnstone COVID-19 Information
The ongoing developments of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to be top of mind for all of us as we navigate this unprecedented community health event. We know that there are many questions and uncertainty as to how our community’s response might affect our typical routines. We want to emphasize that the health and safety of our Turnstone Family and community will continue to be our priority.
Turnstone leadership is closely monitoring all developments and we are working with the Allen County Department of Health as it relates to how we continue to provide programs and services to clients, as well as how we manage the gatherings, events, and tournaments currently on our organization’s calendar.

Every effort is being made to fully respond to individual client needs and community requests, including those specific to the impact of the COVID19, using distance-friendly methods as everyone continues to navigate the rapidly evolving health and social landscape.

Throughout this year, Turnstone has closed our facility, offered virtual support and resources, adapted our operations and safely reopened our programs because of your support and shared commitment to health and safety. Turnstone’s COVID response measures continue and we will be taking additional measures as needed throughout the coming months.
Our ability to continue providing “in-house” services will be determined by our shared responsibility to control the amount the illness, COVID-19 and otherwise, that comes into Turnstone. We urge you to follow all recommended precautions and required procedures to assist us in keeping Turnstone open and safe. We are all doing our part.
What Turnstone is Doing
- Social distancing is practiced and required whenever possible.
- Face coverings are required at all times.
- Turnstone remains open to staff and clients only.
- All program areas are operating with adjusted capacities to ensure COVID precautions can be followed.
- We continue to work closely with and follow all of the directives established by our local Department of Health and including recommendations identified for mitigating exposure to acute respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, for our staff, and clients.
- We are continuing to practice enhanced prevention actions including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), cleaning and sanitization efforts, frequent hand washing, etc.
- Closely and proactively screening and monitoring staff and clients who may be demonstrating signs of illness.
- Effective, Sunday, November 22, in alignment with the Public Health Order for Allen County, the Turnstone Fitness Center will return to a reduced 50% capacity. Additional Turnstone Fitness Center operations related to COVID-19 precautions can be found here.
What We Are Asking Of You
- All community members are asked to limit social interactions as much as possible to reduce your risk of exposure, slow community spread, and protect your own health and the health of family and friends.
- Consider your individual risks and health needs in how you go about your day.
- Individuals 65 years and older or those with health conditions identified as high risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes should strongly consider avoiding public spaces and crowds, and limit close contact with anyone outside of their household.
- Continue monitoring your own health and do not attend Turnstone programs at 3320 North Clinton Street if you are feeling unwell, with or without a fever.
- Symptoms to watch for include: fever of 100.3 or greater, chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, etc.
- Not having a fever is not a clear bill of health. Please quarantine at home if you experience any of the above symptoms with or without a fever.

Turnstone is currently operating under its Phase 3 operations plan. The facility remains closed to visitors but may be accessed by clients with advance appointment only.

Update as of June 3, 2020
Turnstone’s Health & Wellness Center, including its therapy pool and indoor track, has reopened for the first time since COVID-19 community health measures required the temporary closure of the facility in March. Members are now able to schedule an advance appointment to use the fitness facilities by calling (260)483-2100 or emailing TurnstoneFitness@Turnstone.org.
Turnstone’s other program areas continue to operate and provide resources virtually, including occupational, physical and speech therapy telemedicine treatments, and Social Services support. The Turnstone campus remains closed to visitors and is only open to staff and clients by advance appointment. Updated service and operations information is posted online.
Turnstone has also released a phased operations plan that outlines the gradual reopening of other traditional programs in the coming months if pandemic developments continue in a positive direction. Turnstone continues to heed guidance from public health officials and elected leaders related to safe and responsible operations in service to people with disabilities in our community and will adjust its timelines and operations as needed.
All phases of the organization’s adapted operations plan include:
- social distancing measures,
- the utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE) including face masks,
- limited client capacity in some areas,
- enhanced disinfectant measures,
- screening policies for anyone entering the facility, and
- Codes of Conduct in place for staff and clients to define the new expectations now in place.
Additional policies and procedures specific to program areas will be implemented as traditional services on campus reopen. These customized timelines and precautions reinforce Turnstone’s measured approach to service in the current environment and its comprehensive commitment to the health and safety of its staff, client, and community.
Virtual Turnstone services will continue to be offered to Turnstone clients and the community throughout the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Update as of March 25, 2020
In response to the shifting routines of citizens in our community and world-wide prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Turnstone Center will continue offering many of its support services to the community and its clients remotely.
Following the temporary suspension of Turnstone’s traditional face-to-face programming on services that was effective, March 17, every program area is actively conducting outreach, wellness and basic need checks directly with Turnstone clients and their caregivers. This communication will happen with all clients at least once a week. More frequent communication is taking place with clients as determined by their individual needs.
Turnstone’s Social Services team is continuing to interact with current clients and community members who contact them, providing referrals and support which include but are not limited to: equipment needs; access to essential needs such as food, financial resources, and transportation; exploration and access to state and federal aid resources, etc.
Digital resources are also being developed by program staff and will be shared on Turnstone’s website at www.turnstone.org and social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube to broaden the reach of Turnstone’s resources and increase the accessibility of disability-related information for our community. Virtual access will also provide wide-ranging benefits to people across the region by removing transportation barriers and addressing the mental health risks of social isolation.
- Should clients and visitors still come to Turnstone during a COVID-19 outbreak?
- Beginning June 1, 2020, clients may access Turnstone's facility by advance appointment only. Visitors are not currently permitted. (updated July 6, 2020)
- We should all be taking responsibility for our own health needs and if anyone is at a higher risk of becoming severely ill from COVID-19 (as defined by the CDC), the CDC is encouraging them to protect themselves by:
- Taking everyday precautions to keep space between themselves and others.
- When out in public, keep away from others who are sick, limit close contact, and wash hands often.
- Avoid crowds as much as possible.
- During a COVID-19 outbreak in the community, stay home as much as possible to further reduce the risk of being exposed.
Will Turnstone continue to offer its programs and services?
- Turnstone will work closely with our local Department of Health to determine the safest approach to offering our various programs and services on campus and virtually to our clients while protecting the health and safety of our staff, clients, and community.
What is Turnstone doing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic? (The information below does not fully represent Turnstone's comprehensive COVID-19 precautions and mitigation measures.)
- We are working closely with and following all of the directives established by our local Department of Health and including recommendations identified for mitigating exposure to acute respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, for our staff, clients, and guests.
- We have adapted our operations and moderated capacity levels to safely interact with clients in our facility.
- We are continuing to practice everyday prevention actions including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) that Turnstone staff use as part of our normal operations to protect the health and safety of our staff and clients. This includes: cleaning and sanitization efforts, frequent hand washing, and helping monitor staff, guests and clients who may be demonstrating signs of illness and helping them exit the facility.
- We are requiring the practice of social distancing when possible and the use of face coverings in our facility.
These recommendations* have been provided by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.
*Older adults and people who have severe underlying chronic medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness. Please consult with your health care provider about additional steps you may be able to take to protect yourself.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Put distance between yourself and other people if COVID-19 is spreading in your community. This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick.
- Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care. Learn what to do if you are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow.
- Throw used tissues in the trash.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others. You could spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick. The cloth face cover is meant to protect other people in case you are infected. Do NOT use a facemask meant for a healthcare worker. Continue to keep about 6 feet between yourself and others. The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing.
- Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
- Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
- If you are sick: You should wear a facemask when you are around other people (e.g., sharing a room or vehicle) and before you enter a healthcare provider’s office. If you are not able to wear a facemask (for example, because it causes trouble breathing), then you should do your best to cover your coughs and sneezes, and people who are caring for you should wear a facemask if they enter your room. Learn what to do if you are sick.
- If you are NOT sick: You do not need to wear a facemask unless you are caring for someone who is sick (and they are not able to wear a facemask). Facemasks may be in short supply and they should be saved for caregivers.
- Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
- If surfaces are dirty, clean them: Use detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.
