Turnstone COVID-19 Information
The ongoing developments of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to be top of mind for all of us as we navigate this unprecedented community health event. We know that there are many questions and uncertainty as to how our community’s response might affect our typical routines. We want to emphasize that the health and safety of our Turnstone Family and community will continue to be our priority.
Turnstone leadership is closely monitoring all developments and we are working with the Allen County Department of Health as it relates to how we continue to provide programs and services to clients, as well as how we manage the gatherings, events, and tournaments currently on our organization’s calendar.

Every effort is being made to fully respond to individual client needs and community requests, including those specific to the impact of the COVID19, using distance-friendly methods as everyone continues to navigate the rapidly evolving health and social landscape.

Update as of June 3, 2020
Turnstone’s Health & Wellness Center, including its therapy pool and indoor track, has reopened for the first time since COVID-19 community health measures required the temporary closure of the facility in March. Members are now able to schedule an advance appointment to use the fitness facilities by calling (260)483-2100 or emailing TurnstoneFitness@Turnstone.org.
Turnstone’s other program areas continue to operate and provide resources virtually, including occupational, physical and speech therapy telemedicine treatments, and Social Services support. The Turnstone campus remains closed to visitors and is only open to staff and clients by advance appointment. Updated service and operations information is posted online.
Turnstone has also released a phased operations plan that outlines the gradual reopening of other traditional programs in the coming months if pandemic developments continue in a positive direction. Turnstone continues to heed guidance from public health officials and elected leaders related to safe and responsible operations in service to people with disabilities in our community and will adjust its timelines and operations as needed.
All phases of the organization’s adapted operations plan include:
- social distancing measures,
- the utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE) including face masks,
- limited client capacity in some areas,
- enhanced disinfectant measures,
- screening policies for anyone entering the facility, and
- Codes of Conduct in place for staff and clients to define the new expectations now in place.
Additional policies and procedures specific to program areas will be implemented as traditional services on campus reopen. These customized timelines and precautions reinforce Turnstone’s measured approach to service in the current environment and its comprehensive commitment to the health and safety of its staff, client, and community.
Virtual Turnstone services will continue to be offered to Turnstone clients and the community throughout the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are excited to welcome members back to Turnstone's Health & Wellness Center beginning the week of Monday, June 1. In preparation, we have developed an extensive phased operations plan, which may be modified as more information and guidance becomes available from public health and elected officials. Phase 1 of Turnstone's operations has featured Virtual Turnstone content available to you to help you stay active and healthy while at home.
Phase 2 of Turnstone's COVID operations plan, which begins June 1, is designed to support best practice social distancing and sanitation guidelines and allows for the reopening of Turnstone's Fitness Center, Track & Pool area. While our staff has worked tirelessly to prepare the Fitness Center, Track & Pool as fully as possible for your fitness needs, social distancing requires that we limit the amenities and services available at this time, as well as adapt how the facility is accessed.
Scheduling Your Visit
Access to the Fitness Center will be permitted by advance appointments only. You may request your scheduled appointment for the Fitness Center, Track, and/or pool up to one week in advance by emailing TurnstoneFitness@Turnstone.org or calling (260)483-2100. Access to the Health & Wellness Center will begin Monday, June 1.
- Members are required to schedule visits in 1.5-hour increments, with a limit of two visits per week initially.
- Appointments will be available at least 24-hours ahead and up to one week in advance.
- You must request a scheduled visit in advance of your visit.
- Members must commit to following our social distancing plan when using the facility.
- Schedule blocks begin at 8:00am, 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm and 4:00pm with 30-minute staff cleaning sessions between blocks. All clients must exit the facility during the cleaning sessions.
Phase Two Operations Overview
- Turnstone's Health & Wellness Center, including the Track and Pool, is the only program area accessible on Turnstone's campus at this time. Access to other areas of the facility will not be possible until future operations phases.
- A limited number of members will be allowed in the Fitness Center and Pool area at one time to ensure social distancing.
- No visitors will be permitted in the facility at this time.
- Members will be required to schedule visits in 1.5-hour increments, with a limit of two visits per week initially. Specific instructions for scheduling and expectations will be provided to you. Confirmation of your requested visit must be received before coming to Turnstone's Campus.
- Appointments will be available up to one week in advance.
- For member safety, group fitness classes will not be immediately available and some equipment has been moved to the Fieldhouse to better allow for social distancing.
- Towels will not be provided.
- Showers and changing areas will be available for the pool area only.
- Vending machines will not be available.
- Cleaning will take place throughout the day using an EPA-approved disinfectant. The facility will be closed for 30 minutes every two hours for more in-depth cleaning.
- Members must bring and wear face masks, except in the water.
- All members will be screened at the Plassman Athletic Center front desk.
- All members are asked to commit to following our social distancing plan when using the facility.
We will continue to provide you with more information and details. In the meantime, we are continuing to offer online Virtual Turnstone resources and support for your at-home fitness goals.

Turnstone is continuing its operations plan to serve our clients and community through Virtual Turnstone programs in the current stage of Governor Holcomb's Back-on-Track plan and under the guidance of health officials and community leaders. We remain committed to the health and safety of our staff, clients, and community.
A date has not been determined for clients to return to Turnstone's campus for traditional programming. Turnstone's various programs will likely return to the building in phases, as it is determined safe for clients and staff.
Turnstone leadership and staff are following local community health developments and taking into consideration the risk factors that many of our clients and their families must consider for their own health. And, we will continue to make all of our decisions based on direction from and data supplied by our local Department of Health and other officials.

Update as of March 25, 2020
In response to the shifting routines of citizens in our community and world-wide prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Turnstone Center will continue offering many of its support services to the community and its clients remotely.
Following the temporary suspension of Turnstone’s traditional face-to-face programming on services that was effective, March 17, every program area is actively conducting outreach, wellness and basic need checks directly with Turnstone clients and their caregivers. This communication will happen with all clients at least once a week. More frequent communication is taking place with clients as determined by their individual needs.
Turnstone’s Social Services team is continuing to interact with current clients and community members who contact them, providing referrals and support which include but are not limited to: equipment needs; access to essential needs such as food, financial resources, and transportation; exploration and access to state and federal aid resources, etc.
Digital resources are also being developed by program staff and will be shared on Turnstone’s website at www.turnstone.org and social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube to broaden the reach of Turnstone’s resources and increase the accessibility of disability-related information for our community. Virtual access will also provide wide-ranging benefits to people across the region by removing transportation barriers and addressing the mental health risks of social isolation.
Update as of March 18, 2020
After a 48-hour evaluation of Turnstone’s Kimbrough Early Learning Center, the childcare program will be temporarily suspended, joining Turnstone’s other programming and services that were closed earlier in the week in response to COVID-19 developments throughout the community and nation. Turnstone’s programs and services will be closed until at least March 31, 2020.
Update as of March 16, 2020
With serious consideration of government directives, CDC guidelines, and our shared responsibility for protecting the health of our community, we have made the decision to close Turnstone’s facilities as well as programming and services until further notice.
An exception to this current determination is Turnstone’s Kimbrough Early Learning Center which will remain open through at least Wednesday, March 18 while it undergoes a 48-hour evaluation as it relates to community needs, CDC guidelines, and recommendations from officials.
Beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020 until further notice, programming will be canceled until at least March 31, 2020. This programming includes:
- All adult and pediatric therapy
- Adult Day Services
- Memory Care Program
- Fitness Center
- Fitness Group Classes
- Therapy Pool
- Competitive Sports
- Recreational Programming
- Facility Rentals
Additionally, all Turnstone Fitness Center memberships will be extended the equivalent of the closure.
Turnstone’s Social Services Department will continue to take inquiries and referrals to operate as a community resource for people with disabilities.

Turnstone leadership will continue to evaluate the situation, heed recommendations from public health officials, and will make a decision to restart programs and services at a later date.
Update as of March 12, 2020
Given that one of the best ways to prevent the spread of viral illness is to limit contact and the associated risk of disease transmission, as of March 12, 2020, Turnstone will be following the directive of Indiana Governor Holcomb by canceling gatherings of more than 250 people, which includes this year's annual Turnstone Casino Night fundraiser.
We encourage you to rely on information from your local Department of Health for accurate and up to date information as this community health event continues to develop.
- Should clients and visitors still come to Turnstone during a COVID-19 outbreak?
- Beginning June 1, 2020, Turnstone Health & Wellness Center members may access the facility by advance appointment only. All other program areas remain closed. Visitors are not currently permitted. (updated May 29, 2020)
- We should all be taking responsibility for our own health needs and if anyone is at a higher risk of becoming severely ill from COVID-19 (as defined by the CDC), the CDC is encouraging them to protect themselves by:
- Taking everyday precautions to keep space between themselves and others.
- When out in public, keep away from others who are sick, limit close contact, and wash hands often.
- Avoid crowds as much as possible.
- During a COVID-19 outbreak in the community, stay home as much as possible to further reduce the risk of being exposed.
Will Turnstone continue to offer its programs and services?
- Turnstone will work closely with our local Department of Health to determine when we are able to restart programs and services to our clients while protecting the health and safety of our staff, clients, and community.
What is Turnstone doing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic?
- We are working closely with and following all of the directives established by our local Department of Health and including recommendations identified for mitigating exposure to acute respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, for our staff, clients and guests.
- We are continuing to practice everyday prevention actions including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) that Turnstone staff use as part of our normal operations to protect the health and safety of our staff and clients. This includes: cleaning and sanitization efforts, frequent hand washing, and helping monitor staff, guests and clients who may be demonstrating signs of illness and helping them exit the facility.
- We are encouraging the practice of social distancing when possible.
These recommendations* have been provided by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.
*Older adults and people who have severe underlying chronic medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness. Please consult with your health care provider about additional steps you may be able to take to protect yourself.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Put distance between yourself and other people if COVID-19 is spreading in your community. This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick.
- Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care. Learn what to do if you are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow.
- Throw used tissues in the trash.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others. You could spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick. The cloth face cover is meant to protect other people in case you are infected. Do NOT use a facemask meant for a healthcare worker. Continue to keep about 6 feet between yourself and others. The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing.
- Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
- Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
- If you are sick: You should wear a facemask when you are around other people (e.g., sharing a room or vehicle) and before you enter a healthcare provider’s office. If you are not able to wear a facemask (for example, because it causes trouble breathing), then you should do your best to cover your coughs and sneezes, and people who are caring for you should wear a facemask if they enter your room. Learn what to do if you are sick.
- If you are NOT sick: You do not need to wear a facemask unless you are caring for someone who is sick (and they are not able to wear a facemask). Facemasks may be in short supply and they should be saved for caregivers.
- Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
- If surfaces are dirty, clean them: Use detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.
