In 2006, Turnstone introduced power soccer to its therapeutic recreation program. Power Soccer is an adaptive wheelchair sport, created specifically for power chair users. To play power soccer, temporary guards are installed on the front of the chair. Using the power of the chair and lots of skill, the user pushes a soccer ball, which is about three times the size of a regular soccer ball, around the court. There are established boundary lines, defensive and offensive players and goalies blocking incoming goals.
Turnstone's two power soccer teams are registered members of the National Power Soccer Association and Power Soccer of Indy. In their second season, the Flyers will travel to Indianapolis, Atlanta and further to play competitive soccer. Power Soccer offers chair users of all ages to put the power of their chair into soccer!
No experience is required. Power Soccer is for children and adults, age 6 and older. Guards, uniforms, a portion of hotel fees for away games, registration fees and use of a full size gymnasium are all made available through Turnstone. Players and families are requested to participate in fundraising activities to offset program expenses.
The teams practice at Turnstone every Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and 1 Saturday morning each month.
