In August of 2011, Turnstone broke ground to build the Madge Rothschild Pediatric Therapy Wing, which expands the pediatric therapy area of the facility by 10,000 square feet. This $1.4 million expansion will allow for more children to be served by Turnstone’s physical, occupational and speech therapists. Now open, the addition of this space will allow Turnstone to address its waiting list of children in need of the speech, physical and occupational therapy programs provided by Turnstone. By 2015, Turnstone projects that it will provide therapy to more than 600 children a year.

The addition of the new wing will also provide Turnstone with opportunities to create new and innovative therapy spaces and programs for children with disabilities, including…

- Snoezelen Multi-Sensory Room

- Augmentative Alternative Communication Lab

- Adaptive Bike Evaluations

- A Mommy and Me Infant Stimulation Program

The Madge Rothschild Pediatric Therapy Wing was funded by the following donors: Madge Rothschild Foundation, English Bonter Mitchell Foundation, Paul Yergens and Virginia Yergens Rogers Foundation, Lutheran Health Network-Lutheran Children’s Hospital, NIPSCO, CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, Theta Theta Chapter of the Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Petroleum Traders and other individuals.

For more information about the open house, please contact Jennifer Neher at 260-483-2100.

Turnstone is excited to offer it’s annual Summer Speech Camp this summer! Each week we will have a theme based program specifically geared toward speech and language skills. Each group of children will be led through camp activities by a Turnstone staff speech language pathologist. Staff will be assisted by undergraduate students from universities, including IPFW, Purdue, Ball State, and Indiana University.

Children, ages 3 to 8, may enroll in the program. The children will be placed in groups according their age, speech and language needs. This year’s summer speech program will be from June 18 to August 2. There will not be camp the week of July 2 to 5 in celebration of the Independence Day holiday.

Each group of children, which will be limited to 6 or less, will meet two times a week for two hours, thereby offering your little one 24 hours of programing!! The program times are Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 am to 11 am or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to 11 am. An afternoon program is also available on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 pm to 3 pm or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 pm to 3 pm. During each two hour session, we will have theme based group activities, such as therapy tasks, circle time, books and exploration tables. Also included is a theme based snack and a theme based art activity.

The registration deadline is June 11th and the cost is $300. A $50 deposit can hold a spot for your child. Please note: we cannot bill insurance for this service.

To register for the camp three simple forms must be completed and a copy of your child’s IEP or plan of care from his or her current speech language pathologist is needed. If your child does not have speech goals, we can complete an evaluation to determine if placement in the group is appropriate. We will also use this evaluation to help establish program goals for your child. You can contact Chanda Lichtsinn, Speech Language Pathologist and Pediatric Therapy Manager at Turnstone (260) 483-2100 or chanda@turnstone.org to enroll your child today!

Kathy Cass joined Turnstone’s Board of Directors in 2007. However, before joining the Board she was no stranger to the agency. She became introduced to Turnstone in 2000 and helped make the agency’s first Board of Director’s Gala a success. Now in its 12th year, the Gala is Turnstone’s largest fundraiser. Kathy has been crucial to the success of this event, ensuring that every element of the Gala meets the expectations of the guests. From the décor, to the menu, to the auction, Kathy has had her mark on the Gala.

In her eleven years, Kathy has used her poise, enthusiasm and kindness to help the agency achieve its mission work. Not only has she assisted with the Gala, she has been the agency’s primary contact for the annual Pizza Hut Buffet Night, which generates more than $2,000 in revenue each year in support of Turnstone’s therapeutic programs. Kathy also makes sure Turnstone’s guests at Casino Night are kept full with pizza, that the children of the swim lap club can cheer to their successes with a slice of pizza or two, and that the agency United Way luncheons are a hit. She also helped coordinate the photo shoot of two Turnstone holiday cards at the Pizza Hut office, helping to facilitate the agency’s use of Pizza Hut’s antique sleigh.

Kathy donates her time to the agency through her active involvement on the Board and is a donor to the agency as well. Prior to being on the board, she purchased corvette raffle tickets (she did not win), and since 2007 she has sold corvette raffle tickets to her friends and family. She has also sponsored agency clients in the Fort-4-Fitness and if it would not have been for an injury, she and her husband Mark would have sported Team Turnstone gear on race day too.

We love pizza, but we love Kathy more. While she is resigning from the Board, she has pledged to continue to be involved with the agency as a member of the Development Committee and Gala Committee.

Thank you Kathy for all you’ve done. You are appreciated!

Tim Leonard is not new to the spotlight of the media. Earlier this year, Tim was featured in the local paper for a project—“Operation Thank you— he created at IPFW. Through Operation Thank You, Tim gathered and sent thank you cards to veterans in the hospital.

Seeking a way to connect with veterans with disabilities, Turnstone contacted Leonard. Leonard, age 25, uses a wheelchair as a result of an injuring obtained while in the military. He had heard about Turnstone, but never investigated what the agency offered. Leonard toured the agency, learned that it offered wheelchair basketball, and immediately an interest was sparked.

Then he saw the fitness center. For the past 2 months, Leonard has been working out at Turnstone. At Turnstone he doesn’t have to get out of his chair to work out; he can roll up and lift independently. His focus—weightlifting, and the results are in. He has lost 46 pounds of fat; but, gained 30 pounds of muscle. His waistline has shrunk 7”, while his chest has increased 10”. Leonard is a machine.

Thanks to the support of Turnstone, Leonard will compete in the Valor Games held in Chicago on August 23-25. The games are designed for Veterans who have been injured or become disabled. Leonard will wear the Turnstone colors, as he says and represent the agency and Fort Wayne with pride. He says, “Where there is a way, there is how”. He’s found both. At the Valor Games, he will compete in shot put, handcycling and bench press events.
